Asphalt Millings Calculator

Estimate recycled asphalt millings from measured area, compacted thickness, and a project-specific placed bulk density.

Asphalt millings quantity inputs

Enter a project-specific placed bulk density.

Estimated quantity

Enter positive area, thickness, and density values.

What the result means

The calculator reports geometric compacted volume, base weight, and a separate order quantity after any allowance. It intentionally requires a placed bulk-density input instead of assuming one product value.

Formula

US tons = area × thickness ÷ 12 × placed bulk density ÷ 2,000

Worked example

For 1,000 sq ft at 3 inches using 120 lb/ft³: volume is 250 ft³ or 9.26 yd³; weight is 30,000 lb or 15 US tons before allowance.

Reference table at 120 lb/ft³

AreaDepthVolumeWeight
1,000 sq ft2 in6.17 yd³10.0 US tons
1,000 sq ft3 in9.26 yd³15.0 US tons
1,000 sq ft4 in12.35 yd³20.0 US tons

Common mistakes

  • Using hot-mix compacted density for variable millings.
  • Confusing RAP in a plant mix with millings placed directly.
  • Adding an unexplained allowance or assuming loose depth equals compacted depth.

Confirm with the supplier or contractor

  • Material source, gradation, contamination, moisture, and placed bulk density;
  • finished thickness, compaction method, drainage, edge restraint, and local use restrictions;
  • truck payload, minimum order, and load rounding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What density should I use for asphalt millings?
Use the placed bulk density supplied or measured for the actual millings. Source pavement, gradation, moisture, contamination, placement, and compaction can all change unit weight.
Are asphalt millings the same as hot mix asphalt?
No. Millings are removed or processed reclaimed pavement. RAP can also be a controlled ingredient in plant-produced asphalt mixture, but loose millings used as a surface or base are not the same product as newly produced HMA.
Does the calculator design the layer?
No. It estimates volume and weight from an entered compacted thickness. Suitability, drainage, structural capacity, grading, stabilization, and local environmental requirements need project-specific review.
