Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the asphalt calculator for figuring asphalt quantities?
The calculator applies the dimensions, compacted thickness, and density you enter. Its result is a planning estimate, so measurement errors, irregular geometry, mix density, supplier rounding, and field conditions can change the quantity ordered.
What thickness of asphalt do I need for my driveway?
This calculator does not design pavement thickness. Traffic, subgrade support, drainage, climate, base condition, and local specifications all matter. Enter the compacted thickness provided by the project designer, agency, or paving contractor.
How do I convert between tons and cubic yards for asphalt?
The conversion depends on compacted density: US tons = cubic yards × 27 × density (lb/ft³) ÷ 2,000. For example, one cubic yard at 145 lb/ft³ is about 1.96 US tons. Use the proposed mix density instead of treating that example as a universal factor.
Should I order extra asphalt beyond the calculated amount?
Do not add a fixed percentage automatically. Review irregular geometry, measurement uncertainty, construction waste, and supplier minimums with the contractor or asphalt plant, then apply an allowance that fits the project.
What formulas are used in the asphalt calculator?

Area Calculation:

• Rectangle: Area = Length × Width

• Circle: Area = π × Radius²

Volume Calculation:

• Imperial: Volume (ft³) = Area (ft²) × Thickness (inches) ÷ 12

• Metric: Volume (m³) = Area (m²) × Thickness (cm) ÷ 100

Weight Calculation:

• Weight = Volume × Compacted Density

Cost Calculation:

• Total Cost = Weight (tons) × Price per ton
